Karen Hudson

Karen Hudson
  • Legal Assistant

Biography

Karen was born and raised in Alaska, spending her early years on the Kenai Peninsula before moving to Juneau in middle school. She started in the legal field in 1984 as a legal secretary and office manager after attending college in Oregon and Alaska. After working at firms in both Anchorage and Juneau, she first joined Baxter Bruce & Brand in 1994 as a paralegal in the family law section, working nearly 7 years before leaving the firm to shift her focus to family needs.

She continued contracting family law paralegal work from home with several local family law attorneys until taking an opportunity to work for Juneau’s Small Business Development Center, developing and teaching small business courses and working closely with local business leaders on small business events. While there, Karen was nationally honored as Alaska’s State Star for her program development efforts.

Karen eventually returned to full time legal work, first with the State of Alaska’s Department of Commerce, supervising the legal compliance efforts for professional licensing in the state, then finally rejoining Baxter Bruce & Sullivan in 2018 as a senior legal assistant overseeing the firm’s busy family law practice and providing high level drafting and oversight on all cases.

After her husband’s retirement from state service, Karen and Joe relocated to Washington State to be closer to family and their six children. As a valued member of the family law team, Karen now works remotely from her home in Birch Bay, albeit fewer hours as she and Joe travel and enjoy all their new life has to offer.

While no longer in Alaska permanently, Karen and her husband travel back to the state periodically both for work and for pleasure. She deeply appreciates the beauty of Alaska’s great outdoors and when she isn’t working, she takes advantage of both Alaska and Washington’s natural beauty with plenty of beach combing and forest hikes to satisfy the Juneau girl in her.

With over 30 years of experience in family law, Karen is experienced with and committed to assisting clients with compassion and clarity while they navigate the often-stressful process of divorce or dissolution of a domestic partnership.
